STORY:

Unstad, Lofoten Island, Norway

We pulled up at a place called Unstad Arctic Surf for lunch. The menu was absolutely yum. All local produce. The dessert was a standout. Cinnamon scroll submerged in an amazing custard base. So good. Unstad is very popular for its surfing because of the size of the waves it attracts. Surfing came to Unstad in 1963, after some of the local guys went to sea and ended up in Australia. There they got to try out the noble art of riding the waves. The sea off the coast of Unstad is 500 metres deep. The waves that hit the beach are said to have started building up in Greenland, with nothing in between to break their progress. As they get closer to land at Unstad, they encounter a sloping threshold. When the wave energy hits that threshold, it causes the wave to tower up high, producing the waves that Unstard is known for.
