STORY:
Red Dog Gorge, Pilbara WA
Parked on the side of the dirt road, we made our way along the walking track, marvelling at all the wild flowers along the way. We learnt about a plant bark that was used by the Aboriginal people which helped them when fishing. The plants name is Gawiwarnda (Corky Caltrop). This is a practice that’s been used by the Aboriginal people for thousands of years. Basically, the bark of this branch would be shaved and crushed then thrown into a small pool where there was fish. A sleep like toxin was released by this plant shaving in the water that would force the fish to sleep, knock them out. They would flout to the surface where the people would gather as many as they needed to feed. After a minute or so, the remaining fish would come out of the sleep and swim away. Clever fishing technique.
