STORY:

Wallace Hut, Vic High Country

It was a cold winter’s day when I visited this wonderful structure. I tried for 3 years to come here. They close the road leading up to snow season which blocks road access to the Hut. The wind was howling, the temperatures were in the minus. Anything below ‘0’ is cold in my books. Despite the weather, I was absolutely excited to finally visit this Hut. To think that someone lived here at some point in time.

A bit of history behind the hut:
Wallace’s Hut near Falls Creek is the oldest hut in the park. It was built by the three Wallace brothers, Arthur, William and Stewart, who arrived as small boys in Melbourne from Ireland in 1869.

In 1889 Arthur, William and Stewart Wallace took a mob of cattle up to the Bogong High Plains. They were strong, energetic young men and decided to use their spare time in building a hut. They chose the site carefully in a grove of twisted snow gums. It was sheltered from the weather, which could be wild, and was also close to firewood and fresh water.

Although the men only had basic tools, they were excellent bush carpenters. They cut a track through scrub down to a branch of the Big River to get good, straight mountain ash suitable for roof shingles. They split the trees on the spot and carted them back by pack-horse.
